Special Needs

Our Mission Statement: To minister to individuals with special needs and their families or caregivers, to educate church members about the nature of various kinds of special needs and to effect change in attitudes, programs, communication and accessibility so that all will feel welcome at MDUMC.

We realize that age limits do not always apply to individuals with special needs.  MDUMC ministers to a wide variety of ages of individuals with special needs.  Some examples include:

Sunday School:  While many individuals with special needs are able to attend the class of their choice, we realize that some individuals need an environment designed to best meet their needs.  We do offer a Special Needs Sunday School class, 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Ages range from youth to adults.  (Rarely do we have a child who is not able to attend one of our already established Sunday School classes.  If you feel your child is in need of a specialized situation, please contact donnareed@mdumc.org.)

Allergies are a constant concern and we have made a number of arrangements to help with this situation.  All children's classrooms are equipped with Rice Chex and applesauce.  Special bread is available during communion simply by indicating your need to the minister.   Parents, please keep your child's teachers or care givers aware of any allergies or health concerns.

The JOY group meets monthly on Sunday afternoons.  The group involves individuals from youth to middle age adults.

Super Place Camp is a multi-church effort to provide a one-week day camp experiences for children and young adults with special needs.  The 2011 Super Place Camp will take place at our church.

Assisted Hearing Devices are available in our sanctuary for all of our worship services.  Please ask an usher for help in securing a device.

Large Print Hymnals are available in our sanctuary.  We have also installed screens in both our sanctuary and at The Well to help individuals with sight limitations participate fully in worship.  If you need a large-print hymnal, please ask any usher.

Defibrilators and first aid kits are located throughout the MDUMC campus.  Do not hesitate to ask for assistance should you need medical help.

Parking spaces reserved for those with limited mobility are available near most major entrances to the church.  For families with special needs children, there are places near the back entrances to the children's building.

Wheelchair access is available in almost all parts of our campus.  There are two elevators which provide access to everything except the sanctuary balcony.  Numerous places have been carved out in the sanctuary so that individuals in wheelchairs can sit with their families for worship and special occasions.  If you need help in finding one of these locations, please ask an usher or staff member.
